Classification Societies

Classification societies are technical organisations, including members of IACS and other recognised societies, that assign and maintain a vessel's class, certifying that her hull, machinery, and equipment meet the society's published rules. Many societies also act under authorisation from a flag administration to issue statutory certificates required under conventions such as SOLAS, MARPOL, and the Load Line Convention, combining class and delegated statutory work within a single periodic survey cycle.

This is certification and rule-compliance work carried out by the society's own surveyors, distinct from the independent condition, cargo, and pre-purchase surveys carried out by marine surveyors, and from the non-destructive testing subcontracted to specialist inspection firms. A vessel must keep valid class to trade, obtain insurance, and pass port state control, so owners schedule renewal, intermediate, and annual surveys against the class cycle and choose a society recognised in the ship's trading area and by her flag and insurers.
