Port, Agency & Cargo Services
Pilotage providers supply the marine pilots who board a vessel to advise her master on local waters, directing the ship's manoeuvring through a port approach, channel, or berth using detailed local knowledge the ship's own bridge team does not have. Pilotage is compulsory at many ports above a certain vessel size or within defined pilotage waters, and advisory or optional elsewhere.
A pilot works alongside the master, who retains overall command and responsibility for the vessel, and coordinates with tugs and the harbour authority during the manoeuvre. This is distinct from towage, which supplies the physical pulling and pushing power a pilot's plan may call on, and from port agency, which books the pilotage slot on the owner's behalf. Buyers or their agents arrange pilotage for every compulsory port call, working around the local pilotage authority's availability and scheduling against the vessel's tide and berth window. It sits within the Port, Agency & Cargo Services category group on PortProcure.
