Professional & Commercial Services
Ship management providers take on the day-to-day running of a vessel on an owner's behalf, under a management agreement rather than an employment contract with the crew. Technical management covers maintenance planning, drydock and repair supervision, spares and stores procurement, and keeping the ship's certificates and class surveys current; crew management covers recruitment, manning, payroll, and STCW compliance; commercial management covers chartering, voyage planning, and freight administration. An owner can appoint a manager for one function or all three, and a manager typically runs several owners' vessels under the ISM Code as the company responsible for safety management.
This is delegated operational responsibility for the ship as a whole, distinct from the crewing agencies that only supply seafarers and the naval architects who design or survey vessels rather than operate them. Owners appoint a manager when they want scale, in-house expertise, or a single accountable party running the vessel, and compare managers on fleet track record, the functions covered, and cost per vessel managed. It sits within the Professional & Commercial Services category group on PortProcure.
