A davit-launched liferaft is lowered from the ship by a davit so crew board it at deck level, while a float-free raft is stowed in a cradle with a hydrostatic release that lets it float clear and inflate automatically if the vessel sinks. Which a ship carries is set by its SOLAS arrangement, so buyers replace like-for-like unless the survival-craft plan itself is being changed.
What determines which lifeboat a vessel can carry?+
A lifeboat must be type-approved and have the capacity to take the full crew complement it is assigned, matched to the vessel's launching arrangement and davit.
