A davit-launched liferaft is lowered from the ship by a davit so crew board it at deck level, while a float-free raft is stowed in a cradle with a hydrostatic release that lets it float clear and inflate automatically if the vessel sinks. Which a ship carries is set by its SOLAS arrangement, so buyers replace like-for-like unless the survival-craft plan itself is being changed.
A lifeboat must be type-approved and have the capacity to take the full crew complement it is assigned, matched to the vessel's launching arrangement and davit. So when replacing one, buyers specify the approval type and required capacity — not just the dimensions — and confirm it suits the existing davit, which is why capacity and approval matter more than price when comparing suppliers.
